Carlo Ancelotti could be about to use playmaker Isco in a number nine role.
Marca has run a report today, which suggests €30 million Real Madrid star Isco could be used in this evening’s Copa del Rey quarter-final as a false number nine in place of Karim Benzema.
That will more than likely be a blow to youngster Alvaro Morata who has been chomping at the bit for the chance to lead the Real Madrid attack when he could easily have walked away from the club this month.
“Morata hasn't asked to leave, he doesn't want to go,” confirmed boss Carlo Ancelotti.
The worry for Morata is that if Isco is successful in that Lionel Messi type role, Ancelotti may not see the need to move him back into his more natural position in the Real Madrid midfield.
The problem that creates for Morata is that it would put Isco and French forward Karim Benzema ahead of him in the pecking order.
Morata has been very bullish about wanting to stay at Real Madrid this season but if his potential progress is knocked back even further, then it’s not impossible that he could reconsider his situation in the summer.
There is already a long queue of clubs trying to get him so if he is forced to move away for regular first team football, he won’t be pushed for top flight, top quality destinations.
It’s likely to be a temporary measure on the part of the Real Madrid boss but it will be interesting to see if Isco is moved away from any number nine role if he starts scoring goals consistently in that position.
