Van Persie United 2

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

In team news, striker Robin van Persie returned to training today after a long spell out side-lined through injury.

More good news as Wayne Rooney is ‘pushing’ to return to the side to face Sunderland on Wednesday in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi final.

However, United will be without captain Nemanja Vidic who begins his three-match suspension following his dismissal from the pitch against Chelsea on Sunday.

The FA rejected an appeal against the referee’s decision to show Vidic a red card for his late challenge on Eden Hazard.

Reports have emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has ‘enquired’ at Edinson Cavani of Paris Saint-German. The legendary boss was also spotted at Stamford Bridge at the weekend shaking hands with Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich leading to speculation he could be involved in deal brokering on behalf od David Moyes.

Meanwhile, United legend Gary Neville believes the champions need new players but will struggle to find clubs willing to sell them in January.

"They're not scouring all over Europe and travelling all over Europe and being spotted at Juventus and Madrid because they don't want to sign players, they need to sign players," said Neville.

"I don't think it needs a rebuild, I honestly don't. I think two, three, four players - but the problem is everyone knows they want top players and to get them will be so difficult because nobody wants to sell them."

United have been heavily linked with a £37 million bid for Chelsea’s Juan Mata as the answer to David Moyes’ midfield problems at Old Trafford.

However, Gary Neville believes the Spaniard would not ‘fit the philosophy’ of United.

Another former United right-back Paul Parker believes United are ‘not good enough’ for Juan Mata.

“United are not going to get the best out of a very good player. The quality around him is just not good enough,” asserted Parker.

Elsehwree, the Red Devils are also chasing Bayern Munich’s Dante for a proposed move to join the champions after the Brazilian defender revealed he had received interest.

"I'm thankful for the Manchester United interest, it will all be sorted out by the end of the month," he said.
