Toby Alderweireld spent all summer agitating for a big transfer move, but since landing it - it's been a case of 'careful what you wish for'.
Since joining Atletico Madrid the defender has played in just four La Liga games all season, the definition of a bit-part player.
In a World Cup year, with a place up for grabs in a competitive Belgium side it's more than a bit concerning for him, amid strewn hopes the move could have enhanced his claims for a starting spot rather than destabilised them.
The Belgian of course was strongly linked all summer with joining Premier League side Liverpool. The Reds left it late to sign their own defensive reinforcements Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, clinching the transfers in the same week Alderweireld left Ajax for Atletico.
While the Spaniards are riding high, his own personal concerns has the 24-year-old yearning for a return to his former club.
Football Espana reports him as stating to AS: "I miss Ajax, the style of play, my former teammates.
“I can’t be 100% happy at Atleti because I’m not playing. The team is going well and I’ll continue fighting for my place but I don’t think I’m at fault."
While the Belgian is very clear about Ajax, it may be a situation Liverpool could decide to exploit in the final days of the transfer window.
Daniel Agger is out injured for around two more months, while the decks have recently been cleared of back-ups Tiago Ilori and impending Sebastian Coates, both heading out on loan.
Liverpool may do well to enquire about the possibility of landing Alderweireld on loan themselves.
Atletico may be reluctant to sell given they are competing on multiple fronts and want to win silverware, but the player's desire if an offer is lodged for him could force their hand.
