Whilst they do need fresh blood to inject life back into their season, you could argue that United already have options in Mata's preferred role?
United have denied putting a bid in for the player but reports are suggesting a bid could be made within the next 48 hours.
It is no secret that Mata would like to play a lot more for Chelsea this season with manager Jose Mourinho opting for to leave the Spaniard on the bench in several games, and on one occasion when Mata was withdrawn against Southampton, his reaction was less than happy.
Mata has been a number ten throughout his time at Chelsea, and with United at full strength it could be a bit of a headache to accommodate Mata in his starting line-up.
With Shinji Kagawa seemingly being used on the left when he plays rather than in his favoured central position – you would think Mata could be in the same awkward position.
United’s first choice front pairing is evidently Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, and more often than not, Rooney can drop into the role that Mata would occupy – which is why Kagawa’s time in his favoured position is perhaps limited.
Adnan Januzaj could ultimately also end up as a number ten given much of his intelligent play though he is currently operating on the flanks.
It is hard to see Mata operating in his rightful position unless Moyes puts him at the head of a central midfield three – or at the head of a diamond four in the middle if they accommodate both Van Persie and Rooney in the line-up.
Somehow, it strikes as the kind of signing – in the positional sense – that shouldn’t be high on Manchester United’s priorities at the moment.
