Fans react on Twitter to Baines dive against West Brom - 'Where's the consistency?'

Leighton Baines

Everton's Leighton Baines is in hot water this morning for an apparent dive against West Brom last night.

Leighton Baines has received a lot of criticism from Everton, and other club's, fans on Twitter for an apparent dive last night in the 1-1 draw against West Brom.

The left-back was seemingly clipped by West Brom star Steven Reid but replays showed that he went down without being touched to win Everton a free kick just outside the Baggies’ penalty area.

Twitter immediately went mad with Liverpool fans in particular preying on the England international after the stick Luis Suarez received for winning a penalty at the weekend.

Several Toffees supporters didn’t condone the action by Baines, suggesting it wasn’t what was expected from players who represent the great Merseyside club.

Baines got on with his game and produced a solid defensive display, which further goes to show that an imminent new contract is a superb piece of business by the powers that be at Goodison Park.

He’s been one of the club’s most consistent players this season and he’s effective at both ends of the pitch and ensured that Everton left last night with at least a point rather than a late defeat.

There are still a few lingering reports, as it’s the January transfer window, suggesting Baines is a target for Premier League champions Manchester United but it’s more likely that he’ll commit to Everton for the rest of his career.

United have made very public attempts to try and buy him which have been rightfully knocked back at every stage by the club.

Hopefully, after the next Everton game, fans will be talking about a good piece of work on the left hand side, a world class cross or even a goal in relation to Baines’ performance other than a fairly obvious dive to get his side an advantage in a key position.

Here’s what fans made of his performance.
