Destiny wasn't too kind on West Ham's hopes of reaching the Capital One Cup final this season.
In being pitted against Manchester City at the semi-final stage, Sam Allardyce's men were always going to be up against the odds. City have scored 100 goals already this season - and managed six past the Hammers in the first leg of this League Cup semi-final tie.
It was less painful the second time around: only 3-0. But West Ham fans may have still been disappointed to see 18-year-old Marcos Lopes run them ragged.
Indeed, it was the Portuguese who did the majority of the damage against the Hammers on Tuesday night (despite not getting on the scoresheet) and many Mancheester City fans on Twitter have been quick to notice his potential.
A particular source of pride for them has been the statistic that Lopes has already amassed as many assists as Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj this season... In 14 less games.
Could a star have been born in east London tonight - or was he already destined to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo?
Either way, the City fans have had their say: and they like what they see!
If Marcos Lopes played for Utd, the pundits in the studio would be waxing lyrical over him. Not one mention of how he's played. Ridiculous.— Luke (@Komps4) January 21, 2014
I wouldn't mind that Marcos Lopes lad on loan from Man City. Ripping West Ham a new one. #CCFC— Pride of Cymru (@NotOfficialCCFC) January 21, 2014
Marcos Lopes (Man City) has the same amount of assists this season as Adnan Januzaj (Man Utd) with 2. Just with a lot less fuss.— Andy MacNab (@MacNab63) January 21, 2014

Marcos Lopes will be a very good Real Madrid player some day.— SA's Next President (@Kgoele_David) January 21, 2014
Fully impressed with Marcos Lopes, looks a real talent, skilful, strong, attacking and has real flair!— #DH3 (@danny_noble) January 21, 2014
