Manchester United’s scouts have had a busy few months, but there is one man they have reportedly watched more than most – Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.
The midfielder with the €45million release-clause has been in majestic form, and is exactly the type of combative midfielder David Moyes needs to assert some authority on games, break up the play and protect United’s back-line.
While United have seemingly been linked with Carvalho the longest, plenty of others have since found their names attached to the 21-year-old. But now you can add another to that list – the club Moyes was reportedly keen to do business with himself – Juventus.
The Mirror has picked up on reports from Portuguese newspaper A Bola, in which it is claimed the Italian champions are now the front-runners for the player’s signature.
And if the deal goes through, Carvalho will find himself joining forces with two other players heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent times – Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal.
Or perhaps not, because if Juventus also complete the mooted deal for Fredy Guarin, the presence of two new arrivals could ultimately open the door for Vidal or Pogba to leave. So by missing out on one long-term target, Moyes may ultimately secure another.
Unless Juventus can keep everyone happy of course – in which case next season’s Champions League will be a very real possibility.
Then again, PSG could complete their reported move for Pogba, Vidal could stay where he is and United could still end up empty-handed. Such is the roller-coaster of football.
