Recently, Here Is The City profiled Chelsea's latest recruit - Nemanja Matic - and compared the former Benfica midfield enforcer to a number of Premier League midfielders with, interestingly, Liverpool's under-rated asset Lucas Leiva coming out favourably.
On Saturday, January 18, Lucas was brought on as a second half substitute during the club's 2-2 tie with Aston Villa, but suffered a knee injury and was withdrawn just 20 minutes later. According to reports, he then left the stadium on crutches.
Perhaps worryingly, the player himself claimed to have heard his knee clicking, leading some to speculate that it could be ligament damage, which would see the 27-year-old sidelined for anywhere between six weeks and three months, potentially longer dependent on the severity of the injury.

The statistics above indicate how effective Lucas has been in destroying the potential chances his opposition attempt to create and the significance of any layoff has left Liverpool fans cursing on Twitter, with some calling for an imminent replacement to be brought in during what time is left in the current transfer window. Any likely recruit could end up being Yann M'Vila, however, there has, as yet, been no approach.

@JAM_LFC If Lucas is injured then we are more screwed. We can't play a double pivot and there is almost 0 cover fr our players made of glass— IndianKopite (@SriraghK) January 18, 2014
In a twisted way, Lucas injury could be a good thing provided BR gets a top DM who show u lot what real quality looks like. #lfc— Marvellous (@Marvel_Nutmegs) January 20, 2014
Lucas injury - as long as not too serious - could be blessing. Forcing LFC hand on getting a DM in; regardless of LL, be madness not to.— Mike Nevin (@michaeltnevin) January 20, 2014
I hope privately Rodgers knows he can never go with a 2 man midfield with Gerrard being one of them. Also HAS to get a DM to get 4th IMO— Jay (@Jay82_LFC) January 20, 2014
If we don't sign a Defensive Medfielder this transfer we will be in a serious trouble specially after Lucas injury #LFC— Khalil (@Khalil_LFC) January 20, 2014
@LadyInLFCRed I agree that we'd need to sign a DM if it's a bad injury, it's a specialized position only Lucas can do for us.— HawksLFC (@hawkslfc) January 20, 2014
@LFCFansCorner he is defiantly what we need after Lucas injury. Plus full backs. Can't believe how many goals we are leaking.— Iain (@kirkyred83) January 20, 2014
