Manchester United transfer news: Mangala, Fernando...who were United watching?

FC Porto Trophy Celebration

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United

While Manchester United continue to be linked with a whole host of midfielders from across Europe – and in some cases further afield – one name that was once regularly linked with the champions was that of Yohan Cabaye.

More recently, the Frenchman has been tipped to swap Newcastle for Arsenal, but the latest report claims he is a £21million target for PSG.

While David Moyes may have turned his attention to alternatives, Cabaye is beginning to replicate the fine form that would have attracted suitors attention in the first place. So perhaps a bid would not be the worst move, especially if the players he is scouring the world for continue to prove impossible targets.

In other news, Moyes reportedly sent scouts to Portugal again at the weekend. If all the previous claims are true, United staff have watched matches in the country seemingly every weekend for months, and this time they were said to be watching FC Porto.

But who were they watching?

Well the names Eliaquim Mangala and Lucho Gonzalez have regularly been linked with United in the gossip columns, and considering the reigning champions’ showing against Chelsea yesterday, new defensive recruitments may be high on Moyes’ agenda either now or, more likely, next summer.

And then of course there is midfielder Fernando, who has long been linked with a switch to United, and someone who would be a cheaper and very viable alternative to some of the other midfielders linked with the club.
