Luke Shaw may only be 18-years-old, but he is already being hailed as the potential solution to many clubs’ problems at left-back.
There were no quotes to back the story, and at this point there is no knowing how true or otherwise it is. But former Southampton boss Glenn Hoddle has now had his say, and he believes Shaw will soon be leaving St Mary’s.
Speaking to Talk Sport on Monday morning, Hoddle said, “Luke Shaw will move on, Southampton won’t be able to keep him. There are some big clubs in the top four after him. He looks the real deal.
“I don’t think he’ll leave in this transfer window but certainly at the end of the season. He’s got a bright future, which will include England honours.”
To say Shaw will “certainly” leave the Saints at the end of the current campaign is a bold statement. And while it will be one his current fans hope is nothing more than idle speculation, his trajectory is such that the biggest clubs both in England and elsewhere will surely be circling.
With Chelsea in need of a recognised left-back to replace Ashley Cole, Manchester United seeking a replacement for Patrice Evra, Liverpool long-tipped to bring in a new full-back and Manchester City always in the market for the best talent, it could be a long hard battle for Southampton to keep hold of at least one of their talented teenagers.
Hoddle, for one, appears to believe it is a battle they will ultimately lose.
