Manchester United face a test against time to sign a midfielder before the January transfer window slams shut.
United have been linked with Cesc Fabregas, Ander Hererra, and Koke in Spain, Marek Hamsik, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal amongst others in Italy, Ikay Gundogan in Germany, Juan Mata at Chelsea but Tottenham youngster Lewis Holtby is exactly the kind of player David Moyes should be considering as his targets bite the dust one by one.
The 23-year-old Spurs midfielder hasn’t set the Premier League alight, I’ll admit, since his move to White Hart Lane from Schalke just 12 months ago and he is now heavily linked with a return to his native Germany but United ought to be providing him with an alternative.
Holtby has so far scored three goals and made six assists in all competitions for Spurs this season which doesn’t sound like the kind of contribution United are looking for but I believe he has the quality and the track record to prove his worth in Premier League, as long as he gets away from Tottenham where he has obviously been unsettled.
Prior to his move to Spurs this time last year, Holtby was one of the most exciting prospects in the Bundesliga – his four goals and seven assists in the league over just 19 appearances with Schalke are a far better representation of the player’s talent than we have seen in the Premier League.
He has Champions League experience – he made three assists in six appearances for Schalke in 2012 and scored three goals for Germany in international friendlies. He has the quality, the capability and the desire to play for a top team and Manchester United could try to put him to much better use than Tottenham have so far.
The problem is Tottenham and United are battling for the same positions, and Spurs would surely resist any advances from the Red Devils midway through the season.
The summer may see Tottenham relax that stance. If Holtby goes out on loan now then his future will be up for debate again then, Manchester United would do well to enquire after his signature.
