Marnick Vermijl will have surely paid close attention to the recent reports linking Rafael with the Old Trafford exit.
Manchester United’s 22-year-old Belgian right-back is currently on loan at Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. But given his age, he will no doubt be eyeing first-team action at United when they kick off their next campaign.
And if David Moyes wants someone who can both defend and score, he may have just struck gold with Vermijl.
The full-back netted his third goal in his last five matches on Sunday, scoring his side’s second in a 3-1 victory at home to ADO Den Haag.
The match was vital, with both sides fighting against relegation, and the result takes NEC a point ahead of their opponents in the Eredivisie.
His other goals were also far from consolation strikes – he scored in a 3-2 victory over AZ Alkmaar and in a 4-3 win over Roda JC.
Prior to his loan move, Vermijl was a consistently impressive performer for United’s reserve team. And it is clear he has taken the step up with ease.
Soon he may be starring, and scoring, for his parent-club, but for now, he is playing a vital role in Holland.
