Lewis Holtby has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this weekend, and his most recent comments will have heightened that talk.
This week has seen plenty of rumour and conjecture over the long term future of Lewis Holtby at Tottenham Hotspur.
The German international has lost his place in the Tottenham side since the arrival of Tim Sherwood at White Hart Lane - and it looks increasingly like he is after a switch this month.
"But players will be allowed to go as long as they are the right players and not ones I want to take us forward. You can only go with so many and because it is a World Cup year, it is important for some players that they play and we cannot guarantee them game time.”
Holtby’s agent has already confirmed a desire on his client’s part to leave White Hart Lane this winter…
"Lewis is not happy with the current situation at Tottenham. We are looking around to find a solution in this market in January.”
The first option that has come up seems to be a return to his former club Schalke 04. It would certainly suit both club and player. The Gelsenkirchen outfit need midfield cover and Holtby is likely to have a lot of time for his former employers.
However their manager Jens Keller, quoted in Bild, recently said:
"The discussions are not advanced. The transfer is not well presented financially.”
Bringing him in on loan is said to cost Schalke €1 million - a fee they are not willing to spend with the recent similar arrival of Jan Kirchhoff and with former Blackburn Rovers loanee Jermaine Jones taking up valuable wages.
But it certainly does seem he is on his way - and his message today to Tottenham fans has only increased those rumours.
He stated on his official Facebook page…
