Defoe's awkward Toronto press conference: 'I'm happy to be in the USA'

The outgoing Tottenham Hotspur striker got his geography mixed up after signing for the Canadian based MLS club.

The outgoing Tottenham star will hope he lets his football do the talking after making a gaffe in his first Toronto FC press conference.

After joining the Canadian club, one of two that play in the MLS, Defoe was talking to the press alongside fellow new signing Michael Bradley.

However, despite rapturous support by the club's fans, the England forward seemed to be a little unsure which North American country he has moved to after telling those in attendance: "I'm happy to be in the USA."

Despite the slip, the rest of the press conference, which you can see below, went well, with Defoe talking about his intention to bring both goals and trophies to Toronto. He also commented on his hopes to go to Brazil with England this summer, all comments which drew favour with the Toronto faithful who repeatedly chanted “this is your house” to their new forward.

Defoe will be back in the UK in time for Tottenham's game with Swansea, and after scoring last week may expect to start ahead of Roberto Soldado.

He should make sure he knows that he will be in Wales for the game, but playing in the English Premier League, especially as it is a situation he will have to get used to come March.

After all, that kind of mistake might not be so easily forgiven in South Wales.
