Hellas Verona midfielder Jorginho has long been heralded as one of the hottest prospects in Italy and over the summer many teams were linked with his signature - including Premier League outfits Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Last January Arsenal reportedly mulled over a potential bid for the player after the clubs Italian based scout Tony Banfield gave ‘a glowing recommendation’ of the talented maestro.
Chelsea’s interest was far more recent. At the end of last season they had reportedly made a breakthrough with a £7 million bid for the player.
Meanwhile Liverpool registered an interest in the player this summer, while AC Milan were reported to have actually signed 50% of the players rights.
And there was good reason for all the apparent English interest in the player - he is an extremely talented player.
In the end, Jorginho stayed with Verona, vowing to help them fight relegation from Serie A after his side earned promotion.
However they have done more than survive - they have prospered; with Jorginho at the heart of everything. He has scored six goals created three in his 16 Serie A appearances - but now, with Verona safe, he is all set to leave.
Unfortunately he will not be arriving in the Premier League.
“I’m smiling because I have seen him here. Jorginho is here, but we still have to finalise the contract. It takes a little time. It could well mean he won’t be announced officially today. He would be an important signing for the present and above all the future, because he is young, Italian and available for Europe.”
Jorginho will reportedly seal a €5.5 million co-ownership deal with a €5 million option in the summer by Monday - so his combined price will be in the region of €10.5 million.
Time will tell if he is worth it - and if Liverpool and co missed out.
