John Heitinga could be on his way to Roma very shortly if today's meeting between the player's entourage and the Serie A side's directors goes according to plan.
Roma are looking for a replacement for Argentine defender Nicolas Burdisso, who has announced his intention to leave the club in January.
Burdisso is frustrated by a lack of first-team action and has decided to go elsewhere in order to protect his chances of going to the World Cup with Argentina.
The departure of a back-up defender leaves Roma in need of a replacement and Heitinga could be just the man for the job.
The Dutchman has admitted that he would be delighted to sign for the Eternal City side and Everton are open to the sale.
Sky Sport 24 reports that Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is in Barcelona at present finalising the signature of talented youngster Antonio Sanabria but he will fly back to Italy to meet with Heitinga's people this afternoon.
It has been suggested that Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has been instrumental in brokering negotiations with his compatriot.
But this afternoon Roma and the player's representatives will see if a deal can be agreed on personal terms, which will more or less ensure the switch takes place.
