Arsenal & Chelsea eye PSG youngster but what can he bring to title fight?

Reports have emerged in the French capital that London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have set their sights on PSG youngster Adrian Rabiot.

According to French newspaper Le Parisien, Arsenal and Chelsea have been keeping a keen and close eye on the Paris Saint-Germain teenager who is valued at around £3 million.

The Ligue 1 midfielder has impressed this term at the Parc des Princes where, incidentally, he has entered the last 18 months of his contract with the champions.

A product of the French youth system following a very brief stint at Manchester City in 2008, Rabiot has emerged as one of the hot prospects in the France U21 squad but has yet to make the step up to earn his first cap for the senior team.

At 6ft2” Rabiot would be physically well-suited to the demands of the Premier League – he is not particularly well-known for his goalscoring but functions more as a central box-to-box midfielder. However, there is the potential for him to become the kind of complete midfielder in the template carved out at PSG by 21-year-old Marco Verratti.

The young Italian has made his name at PSG since arriving last year from Pescara as a relative unknown – just a year later he is one of the most coveted midfielders on the continent. However, his signing of a new deal to keep him in the French capital until 2018 makes it unlikely that a move is on the cards any time soon.

His junior teammate Rabiot could very well be the ‘next Verratti’ if he continues his career trajectory in Paris where he is beginning to make a name for himself. Perhaps the English capital is now calling him for that very reason – to swoop for the next big thing in Paris before he signs a new deal like Verratti.

It may be a little bit premature to actually make a move for him now for Arsenal and Chelsea but keeping tabs on him is no bad idea – if he still hasn’t agreed terms on a new deal by the summer, he will undoubtedly be the subject of interest all over the continent as he enters the last year of his contract.

But, for now, it would be a tall task to ask an 18-year-old Ligue 1 starlet to genuinely have an impact on a Premier League title fight.
