Potentially bad news this morning for at least four Premier League sides with defenders who has been strongly linked with a move away from their club; Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola wants a new defender this summer.
Bild has run a report this morning, which suggests solidifying a defence which has conceded just eight league goals this season is a priority for the former Barcelona coach.
“Only eight goals FC Bayern have conceded in the Bundesliga this season – only one shot every 31 minutes at Manuel Neuer’s goal but Guardiola believes this is still not good enough!” reads the opening of the report.
A new centre back seems to be the ideal summer arrival for the club, so which Premier League sides have players who could fit the bill?
David Luiz at Chelsea is an obvious candidate and someone who could cover more than one position for the German champions.
The Brazilian defender has been inconsistently used by Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge this season but it could be difficult for Bayern to pull off a deal because of Guardiola’s history with Mourinho from their La Liga days.
Liverpool will be getting a little bit fidgety because they have two of the best centre backs in the Premier League in the form of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger.
However, neither player has expressed any desire to leave Anfield and boss Brendan Rodgers is a manager who protects his players and will do his utmost to keep unwanted attention from Bayern Munich away from the club.
One of the more realistic possibilities is Thomas Vermaelen at Arsenal.
Vermaelen is Arsenal’s captain but he’s been a victim of the good form Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have shown at the Emirates this season, which has seen him confined to the subs bench.
He could jump at the chance to play regular first team football for the German giants.
Nemanja Vidic of Manchester United is another possible option because his contract is up at the end of the season.
Vidic has been linked with plenty of different clubs and he could still sign a new deal at Old Trafford but in terms of experience and reliability, he’d be a perfect centre back signing for Guardiola.
