Deal imminent? - Hull City agree £7m fee for West Brom striker

Shane Long is expected to join the Tigers shortly after the two clubs settled on a deal with the Irishman travelling to Humberside for talks this afternoon

Steve Bruce is set to further swell his attacking options with the addition of Shane Long, after Hull City agreed a fee of £7m with West Bromwich Albion.

The Irish striker is undergoing a medical with the Tigers this afternoon and Bruce is confident discussions will prove a formality ahead of snapping up the Republic of Ireland international.

Having acquired Nikica Jelavic yesterday for a £6.5m fee, Hull are set to beat their club record transfer for the second time in quick succession with the signing of Long, who will finally realise his chance to play for the Tigers after seeing a deadline-day move break down late on in the summer.

"Shane Long is having a medical as we speak. Hopefully we will be able to announce something later today or tomorrow morning," he said to the club's Twitter account.

Long scored 22 goals in 87 games for the Baggies but with just 18 months remaining on his deal at the Hawthorns, the club's sporting director, Richard Garlick, conceded the club had no option but to sanction the forward's sale.

"Despite our best endeavours, Shane has declined to sign a new contract," he said.

"We began talking to Shane about a new contract last spring and, during the ongoing negotiations, we made two offers which would have significantly increased his salary."

Long has only scored three times this term and missed a gilt-edged chance in what looks set to be his final match for the club by firing straight at goalkeeper Artur Boruc during the 1-0 defeat to Southampton at the weekend.

"Shane effectively only has 18 months left on his deal and with him no closer to accepting our terms and then Hull making an acceptable offer, we felt it was in the club's best interests to accept the bid," added Garlick.
