On this day: Chelsea snubbed for Bayern as Arsenal watched Diame

On the 16th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea. Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Swansea and West Ham.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 16th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 16th January 2013…

Good Bay Chelsea and City hopes

Perhaps the biggest news in the world of football a year ago today was the appointment of Pep Guardiola as Bayern Munich manager.

The former Barcelona boss, who had led his side to unprecedented levels of success, was named as the successor to Jupp Heynckes at the end of the 2012-13 season.

It came as a reported hammer-blow for both Chelsea and Manchester City - who both considered themselves favourites to appoint the Catalan in the summer as their new boss.

However Pep went to Bayern, inherited a treble winning side and is leading the charge again this season.

Momo a No-no

Arsenal were reportedly looking at bringing in Momo Diame from West Ham United. The Senegalese midfielder had been in great form for the club since arriving from Wigan Athletic in the summer and had just a £3.5 million release clause in his deal at Upton Park.

Arsenal were even said to have scouts at the FA Cup replay between United and West Ham.

But after his excellent start to the season his form and interest in the player began to dry up - and in the end nobody seemed to make a concrete move for the powerful midfielder.

Total Replay

Two of the Premier League big boys had to get through FA Cup replays against fellow top-flight outfits.

Arsenal faced Swansea and United took on West Ham after drawing their respective third round ties.

And there were similar results at both grounds as both teams advanced to the next stage.

Arsenal beat Swansea 1-0 thanks to a Jack Wilshere strike - while Wayne Rooney’s early goal did the business for United.
