Michael Essien's future may well lie away from Stamford Bridge as AC Milan have allegedly been joined by Napoli in seeking the Ghanaian's signature.
Essien's agent has admitted that it is possible his client will leave Chelsea in January in search of regular first-team football.
Having been a crucial figure after joining Chelsea in 2005 and winning every major honour with the West London side, Essien has lately become less important and the player has reportedly been given the all-clear to leave by manager Jose Mourinho.
New AC Milan boss Clarence Seedorf is said to be aiming to add Essien to his ranks as one of his first acts as coach.
But he may now face competition from Scudetto challengers Napoli if reports in the Sun this morning are to be believed.
However, Napoli look to be closing in on a deal for Tottenham midfielder Étienne Capoue and are apparently in pole position to land Verona star Jorginho, making it unlikely that they would need to chase Essien at this stage.
The most likely scenario for any suitor is for Essien to leave Chelsea on a paid loan deal with the option to make the deal permanent in the summer.
