Cardiff' City's pursuit of ex Manchester United player looks to be over

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lined up a few potential signings with United links, but one looks like it won't be happening now…

As soon as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was installed as Cardiff City's new manager there were plenty of current and former Manchester United players linked with a move to the Welsh capital.

He has already brought in Magnus Wolff Eikrem from Heerenveen who used to be on the books as a youngster at Old Trafford. Solskjaer spent three years as Manchester United reserves manager so has great links with players who used to be on the fringes of the team.

The Bluebirds have been linked with moves for Wilfried Zaha, and Fabio amongst others, and the Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman has said that he expects the Norwegian to use his United contacts to bring in some players for the club. This must have been a factor in the club's decision to bring him in from Molde. Whilst he has of course garnered out a successful start to his managerial career in his homeland, his links with his former club will of course be a great benefit.

Mame Biram Diouf is a name that has been mentioned a lot, with Ole looking to strengthen the attacking options available to him. Diouf never quite established himself at Old Trafford but has done well since moving on from United. He has scored 32 goals in 64 games since joining Bundesliga side Hannover 96. Solskjaer will have spent a lot of time with Diouf in the reserves at United and he also played for Molde but before Ole was manager there.

However it seems there will be no move for Diouf during this transfer window. His agent Jim Solbakken has said that he will be staying with his current club until at least the end of the season. His agent told Kicker magazine in Germany that although that has been some interest in his client, there will be no transfer taking place in January.

"There are four clubs for whom Mame would play, but none are willing to pay the money Hannover are demanding." Cardiff City are thought to be one of those, and Hannover have set an asking price of around £4 million for Diouf.

Diouf's contract expires in the summer so it looks as though he will move on then, but whether Cardiff will want to wait that long remains to be seen.
