Barnsley bring in former Stoke City winger, but can he keep them up?

Danny Wilson has continued to strengthen his side with the signing of Liam Lawrence.

Liam Lawrence has returned to English shores after a spell in Greece with PAOK Salonika. Barnsley have signed the former Stoke City, and Sunderland player on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Barnsley have a midfielder on their hands with over 400 games under his belt. Lawrence is a very experienced player, who also has 15 caps for Republic of Ireland to his name. Lawrence's last club in England was Portsmouth whom he played for during their difficult financial period in the Championship.

The midfielder is perhaps best known for his time in the top flight with Sunderland and Stoke City, but he first game to prominence at Mansfield Town when he was a regular goalscorer in the old Second and Third Divisions. After scoring 29 goals in two seasons, he got a big move to Sunderland in the Championship.

He then went on to represent them in their Premier League season which yielded a then record low 15 points. However he was one of the better performers for the side, and finished runner-up to Dean Whitehead in the end of season awards.

Barnsley fans can expect a lot of creativity from Liam Lawrence, He is a great crosser of the ball, and is also capable of scoring some glorious goals as well. The Oakwell outfit are currently struggling at the wrong end of the Championship. They are in last place with just 17 points from 24 games, and are five points away from safety.

Danny Wilson faces a huge battle on his hands in his second spell at the club. He has also brought in Liverpool defender Ryan McLaughlin, and Stoke City midfielder Brek Shea, both on loan deals.

Wilson will now be looking at bringing in a striker to the club who have scored just 21 league goals this season.
