Chelsea transfer latest: £13m wonderkid would join Blues 'immediately', Ess out?

All the latest news and views from Stamford Bridge.

Having already wrapped up their first big coup of the mid-season transfer market, the successful £21m recruitment of Nemanja Matic, Chelsea may add to that with the prospective purchase of Saint-Etienne centre back Kurt Zouma, 19-years-old.

In L'Equipe, the wonderkid is quoted to have said: 'There was advanced contact last month. At the start I thought it was a joke but afterwards I quickly took [his] call seriously. When a great man like Jose Mourinho calls a little player like Kurt Zouma, it’s nice. It doesn’t happen every day and it’s a big sign of respect and confidence.

'If you tell me to go to Chelsea, I’ll go there immediately! Especially after the call from the coach. It’s given me ideas. I’m playing my third season in Ligue 1. In June, it will be time to go and see how things happen elsewhere.'

If a transfer bid for Zouma, who makes 9 clearances on average per Ligue 1 game, is to be successful, The Mirror report that it will need to be in the £13m region.

At Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, fringe squad player Michael Essien - who has played just 130 minutes of Premier League football this season - may leave West London. This is not news, however, there are new quotes from the player's representative and The Sun speculate Napoli to be interested.

Fabian Piveteau is reported by ESPN to have said: 'The player will leave Chelsea. I have had a lot of contact with different clubs, but Milan are not one of them - or at least I personally haven't had direct contact with the Rossoneri.

'I have some important meetings coming up this week, and then I will fly to London to assess the best solution with the club and the player.'

And finally, the club confirmed that 19-year-old defender/midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah - once touted by Gianfranco Zola as the 'next Frank Lampard' - has joined Middlesbrough on loan.
