Of all the players linked with a left-back role at Manchester United, Yuto Nagatomo may be the best candidate yet.
Forget Leighton Baines, too old and over-priced, forget Luke Shaw - way over-priced. The same can go for La Liga based duo Alberto Moreno and Fabio Coentrao.
The Mail report that United have been offered Inter Milan's Nagatomo by an agent, and they would be wise to consider the 66-time capped Japanese international.
Nagatomo is valued at €14 million, and has scored an impressive five goals from the position for Inter this season including a goal in the weekend's Serie A draw with Chievo.
At 27 he is two years younger than Leighton Baines and United would have a player ready to kick on and reach the next level in his career.
Such are the requirements in midfielder and central defence, United would surely not spend upwards of £15 million on a left-back, they are in no position of luxury and must address the more glaring positions in the squad with greater financial muscle even if Patrice Evra departs.
Nagatomo has been playing for Inter as a wing-back, allowing him to get up and down the wing, but the position is one of the more difficult in football to play well, a testament to his tactical awareness.
For his country he plays as more of an orthodox left-back, doing so most recently back in November in a 2-2 draw with Holland.
Nagatomo has three assists this season in 17 Serie A appearances, racking up 26 tackles and 19 interceptions.
With top target Baines set to sign a new deal with Everton, and Real Madrid holding out for over £20 million for Coentrao, United will have to consider their options - and Shinji Kagawa's international teammate will be one of the better value and quality ones they come across.
