Stats: 6 reasons why United MUST give Evra & Vidic extended deals

Evra

Manchester United risk losing defenders for free when their contracts expire in the summer but both Evra & Vidic compare well to Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal & City players.

There are multiple members of the current first-team roster at Manchester United who have entered the final six months of their contract: Nemanja Vidic (still valued at £13m by transfermarkt.co.uk), Patrice Evra (just 32, like Vidic), Fabio, Rio Ferdinand, Federico Macheda and Ryan Giggs are all free to exercise a Bosman deal in June.

While Fabio and Macheda are both likely heading for an Old Trafford exit, Giggs and Ferdinand are both considerably past their primes and have only seen 402 minutes and 630 minutes of Premier League football, respectively.

Then there are the cases of Vidic and Evra to consider.

For manager David Moyes he has long been faced with a hangover from Sir Alex Ferguson's reign. Moyes has a veteran squad. They are accomplished, but ageing. Considering the dubious nature over the future of a number of players, Moyes has an opportune moment to immediately escape Ferguson's shadow and put his own stamp on the team.

It could be a revolution, yet would evolution be more prudent?

Manchester United still require a playmaker. They may also need to replace other star players.

Considering Wayne Rooney's contract expires in 2015, coupled with the apparent perpetual interest from Chelsea, the club may be forced into a situation of cashing-in on the Englishman in the summer, rather than allowing him to leave with no transfer fee received.

Should Moyes fail to guide the side to a top four position in the Premier League, then what are the chances of Robin van Persie - a player who left Arsenal to join United in order to challenge for titles at the highest level - handing in a transfer request?

While van Persie's situation is speculation, Rooney's may be reality and, in order to avoid a problematic and hectic summer window, Moyes would be wise to tie down accomplished and experienced first-teamers such as Evra and Vidic.

With all the other upheaval, the defensive pair have the United culture firmly engrained into them, they are both proven winners at the upper-most echelon of world football and would be assets to any youth players graduated from the club's academy (like Evra has been to Adnan Januzaj) or to incoming recruits.

If that was not a good enough reason, how about their respective statistical form in the current Premier League season to date?

NameError Lead To Goal/ GameTotal Tackle/ GameDuel Won/ GameAerial Won/ GameClearance/ GameEffective Head Clearance/ GameAppsMins
Nemanja Vidic 0.07 1.29 5.86 4.29 10.86 7.43 14 1,215
Patrice Evra 0.00 2.30 6.60 2.55 5.95 4.15 20 1,779

As a comparative tool, below are tables of data obtained from participant members of the defences of each constituent of the current top four in England.

While Evra can directly be scrutinised next to players such as Kieran Gibbs (because Evra, regardless of whether he remains at Old Trafford or not beyond the duration of his present contract, is very much a first-team player still), it would not be fair to analyse Vidic against Arsenal's preferred defensive combination of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, but rather tertiary choice Thomas Vermaelen.

NameError Lead To Goal/ GameTackle GameDuel Won/ GameAerial Won/ GameClearance/ GameEffective Head Clearance/ GameAppsMins
Kieran Gibbs 0.00 2.67 5.28 1.61 4.50 2.22 18 1,461
Carl Jenkinson 0.00 1.10 2.80 0.80 2.30 1.30 10 618
Laurent Koscielny 0.00 1.78 3.72 1.33 6.89 3.61 18 1,549
Per Mertesacker 0.00 1.47 4.84 3.05 6.42 4.68 19 1,710
Nacho Monreal 0.00 1.00 2.69 0.92 1.54 0.85 13 439
Bacary Sagna 0.00 1.22 5.78 3.61 4.17 2.78 18 1,530
Thomas Vermaelen 0.00 0.86 3.29 1.57 5.14 4.14 7 341

As is evidenced from the statistics, Evra commits to a similar amount of challenges as Gibbs, wins more duels both on the floor and in the air, completes more clearances on a per game average and also clears more aerial balls.

Matija Nastasic 0.09 1.64 3.91 1.91 6.55 3.27 11 911
Vincent Kompany 0.08 2.33 5.00 1.33 6.42 3.92 12 1,005

Pablo Zabaleta 0.00 3.61 5.67 1.17 2.17 1.50 18 1,549

Even compared to Clichy, the only area Gael outwits Patrice in is total tackles made per game, while it is Evra who has the edge in all of four of the other departments.

David Luiz 0.10 0.60 5.10 2.50 5.00 3.40 10 813

John Terry 0.00 0.86 4.76 3.57 6.95 4.67 21 1,890

Assessing David Luiz and Vidic side by side it is clear that the Brazilian has made a similar amount of defensive errors (just the one) that have led to a goal, but has committed to fewer tackles per game, has the inferior ratio when it comes to duels and makes less than half the amount of clearances in both categories (all and headed).
