On this day: Shaw a Blue, £4.2m defender snubs Liverpool as Arsenal threaten to 'spend big'

Southampton Huddle

On the 15th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Southampton, Arsenal and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 15th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 15th January 2013…

Are you Shaw?

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw had just started to show his undoubted class and ability - as teams from across the Premier League began taking notice of his performances for the South Coast club.

Shaw had been linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United - and perhaps most heavily, Chelsea.

And The Blues received a big boost in their pursuit of the player a year ago today.

Shaw revealed on Twitter that he was a Chelsea fan.

The swashbuckling left-back revealed on Twitter during a Q&A session that Chelsea were his first love - fuelling rumours of a future move to the club.

With Ashley Cole set to depart in the summer, that day could come sooner rather than later.

Forren policy

Norwegian international Vegard Forren gave Liverpool the almighty middle finger - as he flew into Liverpool airport for a trial, and then headed down south to sign for Southampton instead.

The talented central defender decided he liked the ideas of Nigel Adkins more than a trial at Melwood - so shifted to St Marys post haste.

Problem was, three days later when the £4.2m deal was confirmed, Adkins got the sack.

Forren never played a game under Mauricio Pochettino and was given back to Molde in the summer.

Hey big Wenger

Arsenal were ready to ‘spend big’ according to Arsene Wenger. The club had just written off the debts on The Emirates Stadium so were in their most financially stable condition during Wenger’s tenure.

He said:

“My plan is to keep all of the players we have and then to add maybe, if possible, two new players to the squad. We will spend big because we had restricted finances because we had built the stadium and had to pay that back.”

The fans may have had to wait a while … but the signing of Mesut Ozil in the summer certainly constitutes big.
