Julian Draxler has been linked with Arsenal this month about as much as Luis Suarez was last summer. But while the Gunners’ pursuit of the Liverpool frontman was doomed to failure, there may be better news if their reported interest in the Schalke starlet is true.
Former player-turned journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft has been keeping Arsenal fans informed of the Draxler situation for some time.
He is a credible source, as proved by the fact that he was one of the first to reveal the news that Arsenal had secured Mesut Ozil last summer.
And now he has claimed that despite reports in Germany linking Bayern Munich with a move for the 20-year-old, Arsene Wenger’s side remain ahead of them in the race for his signature.
Draxler is currently side-lined through injury, but when he returns, there appear to be clubs willing to spend big to acquire him.
Fjortoft has previously claimed that Schalke would be willing to discuss a move for Draxler this month…if the €45million release-clause that kicks in next summer is beaten.
And this morning, the Norwegian has claimed that while no offers have yet been received for the player, should any arrive it will be up to the player to decide if he wants to leave now, with Arsenal “favourites ahead of Bayern”.
