Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could find himself requiring a right fullback this month or this summer should Bacary Sagna fail to agree to extend his current deal but who would be the best option for the Gunners?
Here are five potential options...
1) Davide Santon
Arsenal have been linked this week with a potential move for Newcastle youngster Santon. The 23-year-old Italian only arrived in the North East from Inter Milan in 2011 but has developed to become a solid presence in Alan Pardew’s back line.
A senior international for Italy with some Champions League experience as well as almost 100 Premier League appearances, he could be the ideal candidate to rival the inexperienced Carl Jenkinson for his spot in Wenger’s line up.
2) Glen Johnson
For a more experienced option, the Gunners’ boss might consider a closer like-for-like purchase if Sagna opts to abscond this month or in the summer. 29-year-old Johnson has been employed by West Ham, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Liverpool where he has spent the last five years of his career, a full England international with nearly 50 caps for his country.
Johnson has had his injury struggles over the years yet has still managed to make nearly 300 league appearances as well as having title winning experience domestically. With his current contract having entered its final 18 months in January he could potentially be unsettled at Anfield but its unlikely the Reds would sell do a direct league rival.
3) Micah Richards
One man who could be willing to jump ship from a title rival this winter is 25-year-old Manchester City defender Richards who is another England international who has been on the wrong side of injury struggles of late. His power, pace and technical ability could be enough to convince Wenger he is worth the risk, especially as his contract expires in the summer and City will likely be reluctant to lose him on a free transfer.
4) Seamus Coleman
Should Arsenal be eyeing targets in the Premier League, for me, fewer have as much talent and genuine potential as Everton full-back Seamus Cole who is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated players in the league. The Ireland international broke into the team nearly five years ago now then just 20 and now he combines experience, maturity and discipline with the same tenacity and desire he had as a youngster.
He might not be the ‘designer’ option but he now has over 100 appearances under his belt in the Premier League as well as a dozen goals and plenty more assists and yet he still valued at just around £5 million.
5) Martin Montoya
Further afield, another man whose contract expires this summer is Barcelona youngster Montoya who has been linked with a move to England, predominantly with Liverpool. The 22-year-old could be lured away from the Camp Nou should he fail to agree the terms of a new deal imminently but he could initially find it challenging to adapt to the demands of English football.
