It has been a year since Philippe Coutinho arrived at Anfield and he's become a fans favourite. Yet there is still room to improve...
Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has said he wants to improve his game further after spending a year on Merseyside.
Coutinho told the club’s website that he has become a more accomplished player since he arrived at Anfield in January last year but says he wants to keep improving, especially on the goalscoring front.
He said: ‘Sometimes my positioning is not the best and I need to improve that to score more goals.
‘I want to continue improving and look forward to work harder – and harder on what I need to do to be considered a great player.
‘I think I have improved with my positioning on the pitch because sometimes I play on the wings and other times in the middle.
I have improved my knowledge a lot more and have worked harder on my finishing.’
These comments alone should encourage Liverpool fans. Technically a very good footballer, he really wants to improve his game – though many top sides will probably take the 21-year-old as he is right now given the contribution he has made to Liverpool going forward since his arrival at the club a year ago.
Manager Brendan Rodgers uses the words ‘hunger’ and ‘desire’ which seem in tune with the Brazilian’s attitude. He feels he has to score more goals and he has acknowledged the area he feels he needs to improve in order to become more prolific in front of goal.
He has showcased his ability to pick out a defence splitting pass and the ability to hold onto the ball whilst others will try and use a more physical approach to dispossess him.
Given the £8.5m Liverpool paid Inter Milan for his services, and the improvement he feels he has left in his game, it is looking like one of the best pieces of business done by the club in recent years.
