As Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to receive his Ballon d’Or award in tears last night, Arsenal fan Piers Morgan was busy putting together his elite Premier League XI to take on the FIFA team of the year.
The fact no Premier League players appeared in FIFA’s selection of the best players prompted Morgan to publish the Tweet, seemingly illustrating the strength of England’s top league.
What was surprising is that Morgan’s best Premier League team only contained the names of two Arsenal players; Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Ozil.
My Premier League XI to take on FIFA XI: Hart, Ivanovic, Kompany, Koscielny, Baines, Hazard, Ozil, Fernandinho, Toure, Suarez, Rooney.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) January 13, 2014
It’s surprising considering how avid a supporter of the Gunners Morgan is, regularly Tweeting throughout any Arsenal game, shooting down anyone who dares to question the strength of his club.
However, had he chosen Olivier Giroud to start up front ahead of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, there would have been plenty of people questioning whether he knew anything about football at all.
There were further Arsenal appearances with Wojciech Szczesny and Aaron Ramsey both making the substitutes bench but the love for Arsenal in a Premier League XI sense stopped there.
