Given Nani’s less-than-consistent form for Manchester United and their need for quality midfield reinforcements, Portuguese newspaper A Bola has an interesting headline today.
‘William Carvalho can be the key to Nani’, they declare; which may be the complete opposite of what many United fans would be thinking. After all, if anything, surely Nani is the key to Carvalho.
What I mean by that is that Nani’s time at Old Trafford has seen disappointing contributions interspersed with fleeting moments of brilliance. In fact if there is a word to define even less than fleeting, it surely now applies. 'Rare' doesn’t quite cut it; 'barely seen' is more apt.
Carvalho on the other hand has been hailed as one of a few potential saviours for David Moyes’ men.
How close he really is to becoming the ‘next Vieira’ is irrelevant. The Sporting Lisbon midfielder is an outstanding talent in his own right, and is destined for an outstanding career at one of the top sides in Europe.
United have been heavily linked, although in recent days their attention – and consequently that of the media – has turned from Portugal to Italy. But with Nani tipped for a loan move back to Lisbon, Carvalho has found himself back in the rumour mill by association.
A Bola claims that Nani’s high wages may prevent a loan move happening this month, before suggesting that a temporary switch could still go through if United agree to supplement the winger’s wages, something that could reportedly be encouraged if Sporting give them first-refusal on Carvalho.
As complicated as that may sound, it does make sense, if Moyes is interested in the 21-year-old that is.
With Arsenal also reportedly circling, first-refusal for one of Europe’s most exciting midfield starlets could be an offer too good to refuse. Especially if reports are true that Sporting would be willing to accept €30million for a player with a release-clause of €45million.
Then again, if Moyes is serious in his reported pursuit of Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba, perhaps he has already moved on.
