Manchester City are reportedly keen to sign Barcelona midfielder Xavi…only that is not the whole story.
The Spanish midfield maestro has prompted a number of headlines by casting doubt over his future, and while the likes of City and Manchester United have themselves been linked with a transfer, the latest story suggests the Blues could make him their marquee signing at their MLS franchise New York City.
The Telegraph reports that with the American club set to kick-off their debut season in 2015, a player who by then would have just one year left on his Barcelona contract could be tempted to swap Spain for the States.
By then he would be 35, but his talent is such that one can imagine him dominating midfields for some time to come. And while reports had suggested former teammate Thierry Henry had been bestowing the virtues of his current club New York Red Bulls, Xavi could instead rock up at their soon-to-be city rivals.
It would be one hell of a coup for the Blues, but for now it remains speculation just like most of the stories currently doing the rounds.
If Xavi did opt to move on, there would be a queue round the block for his services, but with the MLS’s reputation growing all the time, he could be the cherry on the cake…or should that be the biggest fish in the Big Apple, if you will pardon the muddled metaphors.
