Aston Villa are poised to sign Grant Holt, manager Paul Lambert indicated.
Aston Villa are a side in need of fresh faces to provide a spark to their 2014, but not many would have guessed Grant Holt would be the man to provide it.
The Wigan Athletic forward is tipped to attend a medical at the club this morning ahead of completing a loan move.
Holt made his name at Norwich City, where his form in the Premier League a couple of season ago under Paul Lambert prompted talk of an England call-up ahead of Euro 2012.
His form has dropped dramatically since then, hence he finds himself in the Championship. The 32-year-old has two goals in 19 games in all competitions since then.
Lambert, quizzed about the move after the Arsenal defeat last night, hinted Holt's leadership and experience would be key in helping Villa kick on.
He said: "I had him at Norwich and he was fantastic for me - a proper guy."
That's all well and good, but if Lambert wanted a new assistant manager, perhaps he should go out and hire one?
It's fair to say Aston Villa fans have been sceptical on the move too, here's a look at the scathing reaction on Twitter:
I hope to God it isn't Holt. We don't need more Championship players. We don't need any strikers. We need people in middle of park. #AVFC— The Villa Blog (@AVFCBlog) January 13, 2014
I'm happy with Holt so long as we spend a bit of money elsewhere on the team. If we don't then it's just an insult. #avfc— Luke Ramplin (@lukeavfc) January 13, 2014
Grant Holt? Lambert wanted hungry players, I suppose that's one player who is always hungry #avfc— Dips Parmar (@Dips_avfc) January 13, 2014
Few years back Darren Bent £24m, Today Grant Holt on loan. How things change. proud history no future #avfc— Imran (@M7RNI) January 13, 2014
That being said, Holt on loan says a lot more than if it was permanent. Clearly a backup option #AVFC— #OpFunKill (@Hamster_1874) January 13, 2014
Wow Sky Sports rumour blog is saying Grant Holt is having a medical at VP tomorrow... This is embarrassing...even for #avfc— Sporting Genius (@Sporting_Genius) January 13, 2014
If Grant Holt comes to Villa then I am sorry but it's time for Randy Lerner, Paul Faulkner & Lambert to go!! No idea. Inept #AVFC— Richard Armstrong (@RicardoAVFC) January 13, 2014
If we sign Grant Holt, I have lost all faith in Lambert's decision making! #avfc— Anthony Roy Pearson (@anthonypears09) January 13, 2014
Grant holt. Strikes the same fear that the Heskey signing did when I nearly crashed my car. It's over #avfc— Phillip Shaw (@prsgame) January 13, 2014
