Arsene Wenger's post-game update on injured Monreal and Rosicky

Rosicky In Action

Monreal and Rosicky suffer knocks as Gunners win at Villa Park.

Arsenal’s win over Aston Villa on Monday night was marred by a double injury blow, as Tomas Rosicky and Nacho Monreal were both forced to leave the pitch with knocks.

Left-back Monreal suffered a foot injury after a challenge with Ron Vlaar, with Arsene Wenger confirming that the club would check for a metatarsal injury today.

Monreal was making his 23rd appearance for the Gunners, but has rarely started a game during the current campaign and a significant injury would represent a set-back for the 27-year-old Spaniard.

Wenger said: “Monreal was an accident, but we have to check his metatarsal in the morning. He got kicked on the top of the laces.”

Also concerning for Wenger was the injury to Rosicky, who had to be withdrawn shortly after he came on thanks to an elbow in the face from Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Czech has been one of Arsenal’s best players in recent weeks, but could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

“Rosicky has a bad nose. I don't know if it’s broken or not, but it looks bad. It was an elbow, but I didn't see it honestly,” said Wenger. “Tomas told me it was an elbow, but he doesn’t know if he did it on purpose.”

Arsenal won 2-1 at Villa Park thanks to goals from Jack Wilshere – assisted by Monreal – and Olivier Giroud. The three points sent the Gunners back to the Premier League summit.
