Gilberto Silva will always be an Arsenal legend, not least for the role he played in the Gunners’ unbeaten season that saw them crowned the Invincibles.
At 37, many would have expected him to have long since retired, but in fact Silva has reinvented himself as a defender and helped his most recent club Atletico Mineiro win the Copa Libertadores last season.
But the Brazilian club have now announced that Silva has made his final appearance for them.
As reported by Sambafoot, Atletico’s director of football Eduardo Maluf said, “It is a decision of the board. Gilberto came up to expectations. But who defines and makes the decisions in football is the football director and president; it is they who map what is best for the club.
“We have other ideas in our thinking. Gilberto has been helpful, a leader, and corresponded. He has other proposals and so do Atletico.”
Whether those “other proposals” include offers to continue his already remarkable career remains to be seen. At 37, it may be expected he would now retire. But as any ex-player would surely testify, for as long as you can play, you should play.
