A reported Manchester United clear out is coming, and while much of that may take place in the summer, we may also see some under-performing stars depart in January.
one name tipped to leave despite recently signing a new contract is inconsistent winger Nani.
United are thought to have extended his deal purely to prevent him leaving on a free this summer, and as his performances remain frustrating it's unlikely the club would stand in his way if an offer came in.
Nani being tipped as one of the potential names in a Mail report to leave Old Trafford has alerted the Portuguese press who believe he could return to Sporting Lisbon, even on a loan deal.
This for United is actually a perfect solution, as it presents a huge trump card in their efforts to sign one of Sporting's most promising players.
Manchester United have been reportedly scouting midfielder William Carvalho for months, a 21-year-old Angolan born powerhouse who last year won his first cap for Portugal.
Despite rumours of a €45 million release clause in his contract, Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported last week that Sporting will deal at €30 million.
Arsenal have recently been linked too and are said to have scouted the player, but United's ownership of Nani and willingness to deal him gives them an edge.
While a loan deal could be the first part of this, it would be in mind for United to cash in over the summer.
Selling Nani would reduce the cash needed to acquire Carvalho by a third or even half, and make his signature appear more cost effective and the player better value for money.
It's just a working theory at this point, but it's one United would be wise to act on if they are serious about signing Carvalho.
