It has been a while since we wrote about Kelechi Iheanacho.
For a time he was hardly out of these pages, seemingly starring in a one-man soap opera that included alleged fights between coaches and agents, reports of his disappearance, and a reported tug-of-war for his services from some of Europe’s biggest teams.
For a while it appeared FC Porto had got the player, then Arsenal and Manchester United were linked, and finally Manchester City were said to be ready to hold talks with the 17-year-old.
And then it all went quiet. Very quiet in fact considering how many column-inches Iheanacho had generated previously.
But reports in recent days claimed the forward had signed a pre-contract agreement with Manuel Pellegrini’s men.
Website Nigerian Bulletin has published quotes James Iheanacho is said to have given in an interview with brilafm.net.
“The situation is that Kelechi hasn’t turned 18 yet and until he does, he can’t sign, but what he has done is sign a pre-contract with Manchester City pending his 18th birthday.”
That day comes on the 3 October 2014, so City fans have a while to wait before they can see Iheanacho in any kind of action. And while it may be sometime before he is turning out for the first-team, his achievements so far suggest he is worth it.
