Tottenham transfer latest: Italy legend snubs club, Defoe in Toronto

Some of the key stories relating to Tottenham Hotspur on this Monday evening.

Reports in Italy suggest that Tottenham’s attempts to secure Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo have failed after he snubbed both Spurs and Manchester United, and is due to sign a new contract with the Serie A champions in the very near future.

Midfielder Mousa Dembele has said that striker Jermain Defoe will be missed by the club when he moves to MLS side Toronto for £8m at the end of February.

Defoe scored in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend and Dembele is quoted in the London Evening Standard saying: ‘For us he’s very important. I think everyone knows his quality and of course we will miss him, for sure.

‘It was nice for him to score, though. We are happy for him.’

Defoe has been in Toronto to sign a deal with the MLS side and has said he is excited about the move across the Atlantic Ocean.

He said: ‘I just wanted to get over here and see the city. I’m looking forward to it; it’s a fantastic challenge and a great opportunity. I’m really excited, I feel like a little kid.

‘It’s always a challenge when you go to a new club. Playing against different opposition is always going to be a challenge but that’s what I play football for; I’m going to enjoy it. I’m delighted I made the decision to come.’

Youngster Nabil Bentaleb has said that Head Coach Tim Sherwood knows him better than anyone, and wants to take advantage of the opportunity given to him by the Spurs boss.

Bentaleb is quoted saying: ‘I am really enjoying [being in the first team] – and learning from it as well. I am training with the very big players every day, and you can just enjoy it.

‘The nerves, you feel them before the game, or when you’re sitting on the bench and you’re getting ready to come on – but once you’re on the pitch you forget everything and I just focus on my own game.’
