Yesterday the rumour mill went into overdrive with claims that Nemanja Matic was closing in on a return to Chelsea. And while the suggestion that he had ruled himself out of Benfica’s match against FC Porto was wide of the mark, the stories since have claimed a deal is only a matter of time.
Chelsea have already had the midfielder once, only to send him to Portugal as part of the deal that brought David Luiz the other way. But Matic has developed considerably since then, and if he does return to Stamford Bridge, the Serbian international could give Yaya Toure a run for his money in the competition to be the Premier League’s best midfielder.
Because as much as Matic will be signed (if the move goes through) for his ability to dictate the play, he has also proved he knows where the goal is. And this evening he will be in good company when he goes up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar for the 2013 FIFA Puskas Award, which is awarded to the most spectacular strike of the year as voted for by fans.
While many believe Ibrahimovic’s bicycle-kick against England will be crowned the winner, Matic’s strike deserves another watch or three, so here it is, for your enjoyment, and for Chelsea fans to hope he can replicate it if he does return to Stamford Bridge.
