When Yann M’Vila was spotted in the crowd at the Merseyside derby back in November, tongues understandably started wagging, while fingers tapped out frantic, speculative tweets.
The French midfielder soon revealed he was simply there to support his friend, Mamadou Sakho, who had invited him to the match. And that seemed to be the end of it.
But reports at the end of last week claimed Brendan Rodgers had been given the green light to sign M’Vila on loan from his current club Rubin Kazan.
However, there has been another twist in the tale, with Sky Italia reporting last night that said loan move had been rejected by the Russian side.
With Napoli also reportedly interested in the player, the report claims the Italians will sit down with the Russian club’s officials next week to see if a deal can be agreed, with Rafael Benitez’s side reportedly considering a permanent deal in January rather than waiting until the summer.
Where this leaves Liverpool remains to be seen. But given M’Vila’s undeniable talent, he would certainly improve the Reds if they can sign him, either temporarily or for the next few years.
