Reports this morning claim Chelsea have agreed a €35million deal to bring their former midfielder Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge.
The story originated from Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, with the report claiming the midfielder did not want to travel with his Benfica teammates for today’s huge match against FC Porto.
The report adds that personal terms have been agreed and if everything goes to plan, he will be unveiled as a Chelsea player as early as tomorrow.
As much as Blues fans may disagree, the headline news is not so much Matic’s reported move (it has long been touted) but in the claim that the 26-year-old has opted not to play in arguably his club’s biggest match of the season so far.
With Benfica and Porto equal on points and just one behind current leaders Sporting Lisbon, today’s game could go a long way to deciding who ultimately wins the Primeira Liga; so for Matic to opt out would be a huge development.
For now the latest claims remain unsubstantiated, but more than a few Chelsea supporters will have their eyes on Benfica’s team line-up come 4:00pm this afternoon.
That is when Portugal’s biggest match of the day kicks off, and if Matic is not in the squad, it may be time for Blues fans to start getting excited.
