Jan Aage Fjortoft may be more familiar to most English football fans as the former Norwegian international who turned out for the likes of Swindon Town and Middlesbrough.
But now he has a new career as a journalist, and if you are seeking credibility, he was one of the first to reveal the news that Arsenal had secured Mesut Ozil in the final moments of the last transfer window.
More recently, he has claimed the Gunners are favourites to sign Schalke starlet Julian Draxler, and given the summer arrival of Sidney Sam, that is a move that could still happen.
But Fjortoft has turned his attention away from Arsenal for a while, and has had his say on the reports linking Manchester United with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
David Moyes’ side has long been linked with the German international, but fresh reports yesterday claimed they were readying a £24million offer for the 23-year-old this month.
Given the price touted, and the fact that Gundogan is regularly linked with Real Madrid, it was either a move with little chance of success or one designed to get ahead of any rivals for an outstanding talent.
But Fjortoft has moved to quash the hopes of United fans hoping for a much-needed January boost.
Speaking on his official Twitter account, the journalist claimed Dortmund are desperate to extend the player’s current contract (that expires in 2015), that Real are favourites for his signature and that there is no chance he will leave Jurgen Klopp’s side this month.
The words of one man can rarely be taken as gospel, and certainly not when it comes to the transfer window, but given Dortmund’s need to climb up the Bundesliga and the price being touted, Fjortoft may just be right on this one.
