Swiss-based Football Observatory of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) have used Opta data to mathematically prove who they believe are currently the best players in the World.
The bizarre list of the World's current top 10 strikers looks like it's been written by a Real Sociedad fan, as both of their front two make the cut. And although It is supposedly used on data from this season, Both of the Bundesliga current top goalscorers miss out, yet Marco Reus who hasn't played up front this season IS named.
Without knowing how the Opta data is calculated it does become hard to understand. As four time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi also misses out on the list - possibly due to games missed through injury, it becomes clear that it could use some calibration.
Here is the list in full:
1) Luis Suarez - Liverpool
2) Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid
3) Neymar - Barcelona
4) Carlos Tevez - Juventus
5) Wayne Rooney - Manchester United
6) Diego Costa - Atletico Madrid
7) Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Paris Saint-Germain
8) Marco Reus - Borussia Dortmund
9) Carlos Vela - Real Sociedad
10) Antoine Griezmann - Real Sociedad
Some of the players do deserve their place in the list, although the top two are absolutely correct in my opinion. Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo are currently the best two strikers in the world, along with Messi who has unfortunately been injured for a good period of this season.
However, questions must be asked over:
Marco Reus - He simply isn't a striker and if he was, he shouldn't be on the list anyway due to not scoring enough. As Bundesliga's joint 9th top goalscorer with 8 goals from 17 games, it's easy to why he is one of the best attacking midfielders, but not strikers.
Carlos Vela - Despite having a good season, the former Arsenal man is still the 10th top goalscorer in the division. He has 8 goals from 17 games and was still picked ahead of Messi, who has 8 goals in 11 games.
Neymar - Currently the third best striker in the world according to the statistics. However, he is still struggling to make La Liga's top 20 goalscorers, having scored just 6 goals in 15 appearances. Although he is used more out wide than through the centre, that just add to another reason to why he shouldn't be on the list.
For the rest of them there is possibly argument, however, for these three to be included over the likes of Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Sergio Aguero is criminal. It is yet another reason to why you should let your eyes make judgements on players and not computers.
