Just days after the news of Roberto Mancini’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin, further reports in the Spanish press have reported that German club Schalke 04 have entered the fray
Schalke 04 are currently struggling to replicate last season’s league form – finding themselves 7th in the Bundesliga and four points adrift of a Champions League place.
Nevertheless, the Royal Blues are preparing to bolster their ranks ahead of their league push and Champions League second phase tie with La Liga giants Real Madrid and have identified on-loan Sevilla midfielder Marko Marin.
After a bright start, Marko Marin has been limited to just five La Liga starts for Sevilla, and the German born midfielder could be persuaded to make the move back to his native Germany following a successful spell in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen.
The 24-year-old struck up a decent midfield partnership with current Arsenal star Mesut Ozil and the performances of both men impressed German coach Joachim Low who took the pair to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Sevilla are in the midst of important contract talks with Ivan Rakitic and are making their own plans for the January transfer market, however those plans don’t seem to include Marin. There have been talks that the Spanish side are willing to cut short the loan deal, and that would undoubtedly suit Galatasary and Schalke 04.
One team that could certainly benefit from Marin making a return to Germany with Schalke 04 is Premier League leaders Arsenal. Arsene Wenger's Gunners have kept tabs on Schalke 04 midfielder Julian Draxler and the English press have recently reported that Draxler had a tour around the Arsenal facilities – leaving very impressed.
Chelsea have also been linked with signing him to add to their impressive array of midfielders, and Marin could become their trump card - along with Kevin de Bruyne who is also interesting Schalke.
The combative midfielder has been Schalke’s most impressive and consistent performer this campaign, scoring once and assisting a further four goals in 14 Bundesliga starts. The 20-year-old has shown an ability to release the ball at speed, completing 84.4% of all intended passes and being likened to current Arsenal star mesut Ozil.
Whether a deal could be completed for this month remains highly unlikely, however should Schalke wrap up a deal for Chelsea’s Marko Marin, then the likelihood of Draxler coming to the Premier League will only increase rather than become less probable.
