According to Spanish press, former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has made his intentions firm, asking club president Aurelio De Laurentiis to put in an offer for highly rated Spanish full-back Alberto Moreno
The Spanish international, 21, has progressed through the Sevilla youth teams, making his first team debut towards the end of the 2011/12 season.
His full season at the club was a major success, with the left-back cementing his position in the first team and then going on to compete at the U21 European Championship in the summer of 2013. Due to the impressive performances and his sudden rise, Moreno was rewarded with a bumper new deal, which has a release clause of €30m and runs until the summer of 2018.
This season, the 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength, starting 14 La Liga games and being amongst Sevilla’s most consistent performers. Alberto Moreno liked to get forward as much as possible, successfully completing 26 dribbles – more than any other Sevilla player.
His performances have attracted attention from all over Europe, with Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Napoli amongst others taking a real interest. In October 2013, the full-back was finally called up to Vicente Del Bosque’s main Spanish squad and he has gone on to make two appearances.
Napoli boss Rafa Benitez seems to think €18 m will be enough to prise away the coveted fullback, and has reportedly mentioned this figure to his club president.
Sevilla president Jose Castro is adamant his star players won’t be sold in January, and is unlikely to budge.
It would appear that Sevilla will be looking to hold out for much more than that – perhaps Alberto Moreno's €30m release clause and a similar amount for Croatian midfielder Rakitic in an attempt to ward off interest from any suitors.
Moreno would actually be a perfect option for Liverpool, who while impressed by Jon Flanagan in recent weeks - may want to consider upgrading the position, and if they do - they could hardly do better than a Spanish international left-back.
Brendan Rodgers would do well to follow the transfer plan of one of his Anfield predecessors and join the race for Moreno in the summer.
One thing we can count on is that Sevilla will evetuallly sell at the right price – just ask Manchester City regarding Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo.
