Lucas dreams of return of special nights for Liverpool

The midfielder has played in the Champions League in three of his seasons at Anfield, and is desperate for a return.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has said he wants the ‘special nights’ of the Champions League back at Anfield.

Lucas has played in the competition for the Reds in three of his seasons at the club – his best performance with the side coming in his first season when Liverpool reached the semi-finals but were knocked out by Chelsea.

The Brazilian midfielder told the Liverpool Echo: ‘They are the special nights at Anfield and we want them back. Getting back into the Champions League has to be our main priority. Everyone associated with the club is desperate to see Liverpool back on that stage.

‘For those players who have been here a long time like Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson and myself, our desire to get there is so strong because we’ve experienced those games at this club.’

After 20 games Liverpool are firmly in the mix to return to the top table of European football, with the side sitting in fourth place with Merseyside neighbours Everton on their shoulder – but with the league so tight this season, it’s still up for grabs.

‘Consistency is a word that we’ve spoken about a lot over the past few seasons. We’ve not been able to get the consistency needed in order to compete. But in the first half of this season we have shown the progress of the team. We are a more mature team and we are winning games.

‘It’s tight at the top and we will have a better idea when we get down to the last eight to 10 games. We will know then what we’re able to challenge for – whether the title or the top four is possible.’

Most Liverpool fans will have been content with their position right now if they were offered it at the start of the season – given that in recent years their challenge for the Champions League positions has been over by Christmas. Now they find themselves six points behind the leaders.

Consistency from Lucas & co could certainly see Liverpool in the Champions League next season.
