Once an apparent target of Chelsea, Internazionale midfielder Fredy Guarin, valued at £15m, could end up at Southampton, as Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly bracing himself for an official bid for the under-performing Buenos Aires-born Italy international with Guarin heading to the South Coast, in a straight player for player transfer.
Pochettino recently said, as quoted by the Daily Mail: 'There is a lot of smoke surrounding Osvaldo, but he is very happy here and has been training very well. He has a contract here and is expecting the birth of his son. He is expecting his son to grow up in England.
'The hardest thing has been his adaptation to the league, that has been the most troubling thing and something he has been working on.'
With 13 Premier League matches, or 855 minutes behind him, Osvaldo has returned just three goals - a stark contrast to his form and performances last year; 16 goals and two assists from 29 Serie A matches that was good enough to warrant the Saints securing his talent for £12.8m in August, 2013.
Pochettino, though, left the door open in developments regarding the player: 'We still have 22 days left in the transfer window, so we may change our minds, but at the moment we have no business planned.'
Guarin's switch to Chelsea reportedly collapsed for multiple reasons. There was a difference between the Blues and Inter in terms of player valuation, with the Milan club wanting £15m for the Colombian while manager Jose Mourinho saw him as a £12.5m player.
Also, when the player included in the deal as a 'sweetener' was Demba Ba, Inter's attentions were reportedly then turned to a goalscorer proven in the league - Osvaldo.
Guarin has scored three and assisted seven times from 18 Serie A matches thus far this season. He also has four assists from three outings in the Coppa Italia.
