The differing paths of Bolton Wanderers and Rodrigo have been stark since the players spell on loan at the Reebok in 2010.
Bolton brought the young Spanish forward in on loan from Benfica where he was played mainly out wide, scoring just the once.
While Wanderers now find themselves in the Championship, Rodrigo has carved out an impressive career at Benfica for himself, attracting huge attention around Europe.
Now 22, Rodrigo has defined himself as a centre-forward, and recorded an impressive 15 goals in 16 games for Spain's under-21 side.
He has scored five goals in 13 games this season, not particularly special numbers, but his overall potential is enough to attract the attention of a discussed Russian mega-bid.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that Zenit St Petersburg are mulling over a bid of £29 million (€35 million) for the Spaniard.
With Bolton Wanderers reporting a huge debt of £163.8 million in December, as reported by the BBC, taking a gamble on Rodrigo three seasons ago may just have been a deal they wish they made.
