Report: Fiorentina to ask Saints for Osvaldo

According to Sky Italia, Fiorentina could ask Southampton for permission to approach Italian international marksman Pablo Daniel Osvaldo.

Fiorentina's search for a replacement for Giuseppe Rossi is in full flow and there are reports that Southampton man Pablo Daniel Osvaldo is the latest target.

The Viola were hit by a hammer blow when Rossi suffered a serious knee injury against Livorno that will keep him on the sidelines for several months.

It had been a magnificent season for the ex-Manchester United man who leads the Serie A scoring chart with 14 goals.

The Tuscans are already waiting on German international Mario Gomez, who has been out of action since September with a knee injury of his own.

With a tough battle for Champions League qualification and a Europa League campaign ahead, Fiorentina will need to find someone to immediately step into Rossi's shoes.

That man could be former Roma striker Osvaldo, who hasn't had the easiest of times settling in at Southampton.

There has been intense speculation that Osvaldo could return to Serie A and now, according to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio during the show Speciale Calciomercato on Sky Italia, Fiorentina could have already made a move for him.

However, it was also reported that Southampton are unwilling to sell Osvaldo for a price that falls within Fiorentina's financial capabilities.

While several other Italian sides have very deep pockets, Fiorentina may not have a large transfer budget this January and could look for a loan deal instead.
